Paraphrasing The Comma Rules

Section One

 

P-1b - To divide the main introduction word from the rest of the sentence.

Sadly, my account balance was less than I expected.

Thankfully, the rain held out until I got to my car.

Afterwards, it rain poured for the rest of the night.

P-1d – To set off information that is not necessary, but interesting. (Nonrestrictive)

Restrictive lays out the information but does not need the use of commas.

Susie is the reason I got my dog, who is a chocolate lab that loves to swim.

Spanish is the language that the natives of Latin America speak.

P-1f - To set off transitional expressions.

Connecting new sentences with a phrase smoothly.

There are many different brands of skateboards out there. For example, there is enjoi, element, alien workshop, habitat, baker, etc.

Majority of my classes seem unnecessary, but they are vital to my education.

 

Section Two

P-1g - To indicate what a direct quote is from an author's writing.

Then Hamlet spoke those famous words, “ To be, or not to be. That is the question”.

 

P-1i - With addresses, place names, and dates

To separate important dates, places, and addresses in a way that is easily read and understood.

My new address is at 220 South Ave Newport News, VA 23601

I was born in Newport News, Virginia on April 11th, 1995.

Christina was born September 20th, 1997.

P-1c - To separate items in a series while making it into one sentence.

The ingredients in my sandwich include turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise.

Lauren wrote the schedule, managed the hiring process, and took all catering orders.

Music influences us in multiple ways, hence the multiple genres. Some of these include rock, reggae, hip-hop, and even country.

The winter olympics include many events from skiing, snowboarding, and even racing on snowmobiles.

Brands are so evident in what we do that we sometimes don't realize how many there are. There are different brands of everything from Rolex watches, to Versace suits, and even ray-ban sunglasses.

 

Section Three

P-1a -To join two complete sentences with a comma and make them one.

I don't enjoy the sand, however I love the ocean.

Most people think the planet is only heating up, yet climate is changing on all levels.

They gave Christina an A+ on her project, and Aaron got an A- on his essay.

When grilling steak, to me, it is important to let it marinate at least 4 hours.

 

P-1h - To set off direct address, yes or no, interjections, and tag questions

Yes, Ethan, it really is 2016.

No, you can not live solely off coffee.

Oh, you have a nerf football and not a real one.

You will come with me, won't you?

 

P-1j - Checking for unnecessary commas
